WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration has approved the switch of Claritin, the top-selling prescription allergy medication manufactured by Schering-Plough Corp., to over-the-counter status effective this month. The switch should result in substantial savings for the uninsured, while probably costing the insured more money.

EAST HANOVER, N.J. — Novartis announced recently that it plans to market a generic version of Schering-Plough Corp.’s popular allergy medicine Claritin. A Novartis spokesman says the generic allergy remedy will be manufactured by the generic drug maker IMPAX Laboratories Inc. and will be marketed through Novartis’ Consumer Health division.
