AstraZeneca has presented the results of a clinical trial in its GALAXY program of Crestor (rosuvastatin) at the the American College of Cardiology meeting, as it continues its marketing offensive to set the stage for the international roll-out of the drug, which debuted in its first markets earlier this year (Marketletters passim).
AstraZeneca, Wilmington, DE, is aggressively disputing charges by a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official and a public health watchdog group that the cholesterol-lowering drug is linked to high rates of kidney failure.
In testimony before the Senate Finance Committee, FDA safety reviewer David Graham included Crestor in a list of 5 drugs approved by FDA that may pose health dangers to the public. Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization, was already on record charging that the rate of kidney failure or damage among patients taking Crestor is 75 times higher than all patients taking other statins.
